About the Author

Ata Elahi has been a Professor in the Computer Science Department of Southern Connecticut State University since 1986. His research areas include computer networks, data communication, computer hardware design, and pipeline processors. Elahi’s books include Data, Network, and Internet Communications Technology and Communication Network Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University.

ZigBee is a new personal-area network (PAN) standard developed by the ZigBee Alliance. The ZigBee standard can be used to establish a wireless PAN, specifically a low-rate/power wireless sensor and control network. Wireless sensor and control networking is one the most rapidly growing technologies and has a wide variety of applications, including smart energy; commercial building automation; home automation; personal, home, and hospital care; remote-control applications for consumer electronics; telecom applications; and wireless sensor network applications.

This book presents an overview of the ZigBee technology and its applications, allowing the wireless system designer, manager, or student access to this new and growing field of wireless sensor and control networking. For the uninitiated in wireless technology, the book provides a helpful overview of wireless technology, giving the reader the background necessary for understanding ZigBee. It goes into detail about the ZigBee protocol stack, describing ZigBee’s use of IEEE 802.15.4, which defines the Media Access Control (MAC) and physical layers for the low-rate wireless personal-area network (LR-WPAN), and ZigBee’s implementations of the network, security, and application layers.

Organization

This book is divided into 11 chapters, which commence by introducing you to wireless technology and then proceed up the ZigBee protocol stack. In aggregate, the chapters provide comprehensive coverage of IEEE 802.15.4 and the ZigBee protocol architecture. In addition, three appendixes describe alternative technologies that can also be used to establish a PAN.

Chapter 1, “Introduction to Wireless Networks,” covers the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model; error detection; the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band; modulation techniques; wireless local-area networks (WLANs), frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS); direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS); wireless metro-area networks (MANs); and Bluetooth.

Chapter 2, “ZigBee Wireless Sensor and Control Network,” presents an overview of ZigBee applications, ZigBee characteristics, ZigBee device types, ZigBee topologies, ZigBee protocol architecture, and characteristics of ZigBee Pro.

Chapter 3, “IEEE 802.15.4 Physical Layer,” covers frequency bands, data rate, channels, the physical layer data and management services, transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, received signal strength indication (RSSI), and link-quality indication.

Chapter 4, “IEEE 802.15.4 Media Access Control (MAC) Layer,” covers MAC data and management services, the MAC layer information base, access methods, the beacon frame, the MAC data frame and control frame, and the command frame format.

Chapter 7, “Application Layer,” presents the application profile, the attribute, the cluster, the cluster format, general cluster commands, ZigBee cluster libraries, the simple application profile, the ZigBee device profile, the node descriptor, and binding and network management commands.

Chapter 8, “Security,” covers elements of network security, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), ZigBee security and the Trust Center, ZigBee Residential, Standard and High-Security modes, ZigBee security management primitives, counter mode encryption (CTR) and cipher block chaining encryption (CBC).

Chapter 9, “Address Assignment and Routing,” covers address assignment using distributed schemes, stochastic address assignment, Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing protocol, unicast routing discovery, multicast routing discovery, dynamic source routing, ZigBee routing attributes, tree hierarchical routing, ZigBee Pro routing, and routing commands.

Chapter 10, “ZigBee Home Automation and Smart Energy Network,” examines the ZigBee home automation cluster, home automation network requirements, devices used for home automation, commissioning, the Smart Energy network, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and home-area networks (HANs).

Chapter 11, “ZigBee RF4CE,” covers the Radio Frequency for Consumer Electronics (RF4CE) protocol, RF4CE nodes and topology, network layer data and management services, and the pairing process.

Appendix A, “6lowpan,” covers IPv6 over low-power wireless personal-area network (6LoWPAN).

"The first formal right hepatectomy was reported by Lortat-Jacob and Robert in 1952. Before that time surgeons tried to steer clear of liver sugery because of the risk of uncontrollable haemorrhage and the operative mortality rate of at least 20 percent. However a widening knowledge of segmental hepatic anatomy described by Couinaud in 1957, and elaborated by Bismuth in 1982, led to the development of safe resectional techniques for the various major segments of the liver so intraoperative deaths have become rare events in elective liver surgery. The techniques of hepatobiliary surgery have developed rapidly and the subject is now recognised as a subspecialty in its own right to encompass very advanced procedures such as transplantation from living, related donors, split liver transplantation and neonatal liver replacement. This book (dedicated to the memory of Professor Gozzetti of Bologna) is an atlas of every type of surgical technique applicable to liver surgery and is based on the work of the surgical department in Bologna over more than 15 years. A brief summary of current concepts of hepatic anatomy is followed by descriptions of the standard methods of liver resection as well as the more unusual and difficult operations designed to resect single segments such as the caudate lobe (segment 1), segment 4 or segment 8. Other topics include total vascular occlusion of the liver, which is a very valuable surgical technique for extensive tumours, intraoperative ultrasound, portal embolisation and the management of trauma. The surgery of cystic disease of the liver and tumours of the bile ducts is included and almost one third of the volume is devoted to a comprehensive review of the techniques of liver transplantation. I appreciated the inclusion of discussions on possible technical complications in many of the sections, especially as the authors detail the methods of management. These comments are valuable and extremely useful for any newcomer to liver s rgery. As a minor criticism I would have preferred the more general sections of the text to have been grouped at the beginning of the book to form an introduction to the chapters concerned with resectional techniques. It seems a little unusual to describe and illustrate all of the standard operations before introducing a discussion on the general principles of liver resection in section 14, and the indications for liver resection in section 18. Throughout the text there are references to the results of the various operations, but these are, of necessity, rather restricted in scope and the reader would have to refer to other texts for further data. The superb quality of the illustrations, produced in the department of anatomy of Bologna, provides the outstanding feature of this book, although it was a little disappointing to find that the section devoted to the resection of tumours of the extrahepatic bile ducts was not illustrated in the same manner and the intraoperative photographs used in this chapter lack the clarity of the illustrations in the other sections. A potential purchaser of a book on liver resection can now choose from a wide range of texts but in my opinion this book should be high on the list. The technique of illustration avoids the simplification of the more usual type of line diagram and avoids the lack of clarity which often accompanies the reproduction of intraoperative photographs. It really does give a good impression of the 'feel' of liver surgery and does not avoid discussion of the potential hazards. Furthermore although the book was designed primarily as a manual for liver surgeons I am sure that any gastroenterologist with an interest in liver medicine would appreciate the illustrations both as an extremely useful guide to the current surgical repertoire of liver surgery and as an extremely fine example of the art of the medical illustrator." - Reviewed by E. Dr Khublall holds three professional qualifications and three UK university degrees of high standing, including a higher doctorate degree (DSc). He is both a barrister and a chartered surveyor. He has had a varied career over 50 years in farming, deputy chief valuation officer of Guyana, senior lecturer in Hong Kong, university professor and a sitting member of a judicial tribunal in Singapore, and law practice in England. He is author of 16 books (some were published by Butterworths, Longman and FT Law & Tax), 6 study manuals and 33 academic papers. Some of his papers were presented at international conferences around the world. His expertise is mainly, though not exclusively, in real property law, taxation and property valuation. Some of his books are in property taxation, real property law, compulsory acquisition and compensation, development control and planning law, and teaching & study skills in higher education. His first book was on landlord and tenant law in Hong Kong in 1977.

Teachers and students have long felt a need for a convenient, one-volume collection of English translations of the basic texts that have shaped the major Asian philosophical traditions. A Sourcebook in Asian Philosophy is a response to this need. Our principal aim has been to include the texts that the Asian philosophical traditions themselves have regarded as fundamental, for it is these texts that give us the greatest insight into Asian philosophies. Which texts to include was often a difficult choice, since space allowed us to include only a small fraction of the total of each tradition's foundational books. Twenty-five years of experience in teaching introductory courses in Asian philosophy and the suggestions of friends and colleagues helped us choose texts that we think are both foundational within the various Asian traditions and accessible to readers whose ideas and modes of thinking have been shaped by different intellectual traditions.

We are greatly indebted to the many scholars whose translations and interpretive studies we have used in compiling this Sourcebook. Sources of translations and especially helpful interpretive studies have been indicated at the end of the introduction to each chapter. In some cases minor modifications have been made to the translations, including correcting errors and omitting unnecessary scholarly footnotes and brackets. The introductions have been kept as brief as possible so as not to intrude on the texts themselves. Readers looking for more help in understanding the Asian philosophical traditions these texts helped shape might want to turn to John M. Koller, Oriental Philosophies, 2nd edition (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1985) or similar works, including those listed in the introductions.

Worth buying the updated edition because some of the treatment sections have been expanded to include more modern protocols. Also should mention to buy the paper version b/c it comes with a code for a digital copy. I would give this book a fifth star if it had a brief section that explained the mechanism of all of the conditions discussion. In order words, a brief "why" conditions present like they do. This is a personal opinion, though.

My last Wills manual was 2 editions ago. This one has similar clear organization, content, and layout except for 2 noticeable differences: the font size is smaller and the index is terrible. My only concern is there appears to have been an oversight placing optic neuropathies in the index. I was only able to find this section by referring to chapter 2, which directs you to the correct chapter. Optic neuritis, AION/GCA, NAION, and misc optic neuropathies are not listed in the index... unfortunate for a heavily referred-to section. I simply wrote it into the index to get around this, although it feels wrong to write in a brand new book!
